Simpsonville, S.C. — Before Mayor Paul Shewmaker called to order the first Simpsonville City Council meeting of the new year, City Council members who were elected or re-elected in November were sworn into office at City Hall.

Re-elected Council members Lou Hutchings (Ward VI) and Sherry Roche (Ward IV) and first-time elected candidate Aaron Rupe each took their oath of office surrounded by family at the regularly scheduled business meeting Jan. 11. Councilmember Rupe (Ward II) was sworn in first, followed by Councilmember Roche and Councilmember Hutchings.

Hutchings, Roche and Rupe joined their fellow Council member Jenn Hulehan (Ward III) and Mayor Shewmaker at the dais to unanimously approve Councilmember Hulehan for her second consecutive term as mayor pro-tem. Hulehan was the only nomination for the title; Hutchings nominated Hulehan with a second from Roche.

Council also unanimously approved second readings for the annexation and rezoning of property at 510 W. Georgia Road for commercial use and property at 612 Neely Ferry Road for a development of single-family homes.

Council will hold a regularly scheduled Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
