'The common goal of making Simpsonville simply better'
Mayor Paul Shewmaker wins re-election
Simpsonville, S.C. — Mayor Paul Shewmaker won re-election on Tuesday to serve a second term for the City of Simpsonville.
Shewmaker said Simpsonville residents have his "most heartfelt gratitude" for their support in the mayoral race.
"Winning re-election is a high compliment, and I am truly humbled by the honor you have bestowed upon me," Shewmaker said on Wednesday. "It is a testament to the trust you have placed in my leadership and our collective vision for the future of Simpsonville."
First elected in 2019, Shewmaker has served his first term in the mayor's office through the COVID-19 pandemic, opening of the Simpsonville Arts Center, beginning of the municipal complex and City Park projects and positive growth in downtown and citywide. After garnering 52 percent of the vote Tuesday night to remain in office, Shewmaker is making a commitment to serve as mayor for the Simpsonville community as a whole.
"For those of you who supported my opponents, I assure you that I will continue to work tirelessly for the good of our City, and I remain committed to representing ALL the people of Simpsonville," Shewmaker said. "Every member of our community has an opinion, and I understand the importance of ensuring that everyone's voice is heard and valued. At the bottom of it all, we share in the common goal of making Simpsonville simply better."
Shewmaker focused on transparency and civility within City Council in his first term. While he will continue to work on his 2019 platform, Shewmaker is building on that platform to include addressing growth while preserving the City's charm, successful completion of ongoing and future projects and consensus building.
"I have a clear vision for Simpsonville's future," Shewmaker said. "Together, we'll finish the new municipal complex and the improvements to our downtown, enhance our parks and build a stronger community for all. I will also continue to prioritize calm leadership, community service, preserving our natural beauty and fostering inclusivity in Simpsonville. The most important thing is bringing people together. We can and will build consensus among our new council."
Shewmaker will enter a second term in January with three new members on Simpsonville City Council after incumbents in wards 1, 3 and 5 elected to not run for third terms. During his 2023 campaign, Shewmaker emphasized the importance of welcoming the new Council members with support and aiding them with experience.
"My commitment has always been strong to work with other elected officials to tackle the issues that affect us all," Shewmaker said. "My optimism for the future of Simpsonville is off the chart: simply better, simply home."
Shewmaker and City Council members-elect will be sworn into office for their four-year terms on Jan. 9, 2024 shortly before the Simpsonville City Council business meeting at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
