Mayor Shewmaker participates in YMCA Hometown Heroes program
In promotion of literacy, Prisma Health Family YMCA invites mayor to read to campers
Simpsonville, S.C. — Mayor Paul Shewmaker read to campers at the Prisma Health Family YMCA in Simpsonville in June to help promote literacy among children.
The YMCA invited Mayor Shewmaker to read The Cat in the Hat at the Adams Mill Road location as part of its Hometown Heroes program. Community members who help make a difference in the Simpsonville area and beyond stop by the Y on Thursdays after lunch to read to up to 20 campers.
"It was so much fun to read for the kids," Mayor Shewmaker said, "I love to read. One person can never know even a tiny portion of what humankind knows, but it's all there for us in books. Encouraging literacy in children is important and it was an honor to participate in Hometown Heroes."
A Simpsonville firefighter and police officer are scheduled to read in July.
