Mosquito Control & Prevention

The Simpsonville Public Works Department conducts its mosquito control program by placing slow-release larvicide blocks in public rights of way catch basins and other areas with standing water in April. The larvicide prevents mosquito larvae from maturing and biting adults. One treatment lasts 150 days.

Greenville County will spray for mosquitoes in the evenings June 1 -Sept. 30 for Greenville County residents, including residents in the City of Simpsonville upon request. Call 864-467-5988 to request mosquito spraying by the County between June and September.

Mosquito Prevention Tips

During the months when the county does not spray for mosquitoes, the public can do a few things around the home to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Places where water stands for five days or more are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Eliminating both standing water and sites where water can collect helps prevent mosquitoes from populating.

Below are tips for mosquito prevention:

  • Clean pet water bowls regularly
  • Empty and clean water containers and store when not in use
  • Treat swimming pools with proper chemicals; drain or cover pools when not using and watch for standing water on pool covers
  • Check children’s toys for pooled water
  • Fix leaky outdoor faucets
  • Clear roof gutters of debris
  • Remove water from tarps and pull tarps tight to prevent pooling
  • Turn over canoes and boats
  • Change water in bird baths at least once a week
  • Do not leave empty bottles and cans outside
  • Fill sunken places like tire ruts or puddles with dirt or cement
  • Unclog ditches and pipes
  • Repair failing septic tanks that cause sewage water to pool on the ground
  • Pack tree holes and hollow stumps with dirt or cement
  • Treat small areas of water that cannot be drained with mosquito control products sold at lawn and garden stores labeled for water use
